Lunar Eclipse 2026: Europe & UK Viewing Guide

2026 is a rare year for eclipse watchers in Europe and the UK — alongside the headline total solar eclipse on 12 August, two lunar eclipses bracket the year: a partial lunar eclipse on 3 March 2026 and a deep partial on 28 August 2026, just sixteen days after the solar eclipse. Neither requires special filters, but both are worth planning around.

Why lunar eclipses are safe to watch with the naked eye

A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, and the Moon slips into Earth's shadow. Because you're only ever looking at reflected sunlight from the Moon's surface — never at the Sun itself — lunar eclipses are completely safe to watch without eye protection. That's the opposite of a solar eclipse, where ISO 12312-2 certified glasses are non-negotiable for every second the Sun is above the horizon.

Binoculars or a small telescope will make the shadow's edge and the Moon's craters more dramatic, but they're a bonus, not a requirement.

3 March 2026 — partial lunar eclipse

The first eclipse of the year is a partial lunar eclipse peaking in the early hours of 3 March 2026. Maximum eclipse occurs around 11:34 UT, with about 1.5% of the Moon's disc dipped into Earth's dark umbral shadow. The best viewing is across the Pacific, Australia, and eastern Asia — for the UK and mainland Europe the Moon will already have set by the time the eclipse begins, so this one is essentially invisible from our side of the planet.

If you're travelling east in early March, or you follow live streams from observatories in Japan or Hawaii, it's still worth marking on the calendar. Otherwise, save your enthusiasm for August.

28 August 2026 — deep partial lunar eclipse (the one to plan for)

The second and much better lunar eclipse of the year falls on the night of 27–28 August 2026, only sixteen days after the total solar eclipse. This one is a deep partial — about 93% of the Moon's disc will be inside Earth's umbra at maximum, so nearly the entire Moon will glow a coppery red. To most observers it will look almost total.

Approximate timings in UTC (add 1 hour for BST / CEST, 2 hours for CEST in most of continental Europe on that date):

  • Penumbral begins: ~02:25 UT
  • Partial (umbral) begins: ~03:33 UT
  • Maximum eclipse: ~04:12 UT
  • Partial ends: ~04:52 UT
  • Penumbral ends: ~06:00 UT

Visibility across Europe and the UK

This eclipse is visible in its entirety from all of Europe and the UK — the Moon is well above the horizon throughout, sitting low in the west-south-west as dawn approaches. That "low and coloured" combination is what makes deep partial eclipses so photogenic: you get the red Moon against a still-dark sky, often with landscape or skyline in the same frame.

Cities like London, Dublin, Paris, Madrid, Berlin, Rome, and Warsaw all see the full sequence. Further east — Athens, Istanbul, Helsinki — the Moon sets closer to the tail end of the partial phase, so aim for maximum at ~04:12 UT and don't rely on catching the closing penumbral phase.

How the March and August eclipses fit together

The August lunar and August solar eclipses are a matched pair — a lunar eclipse always falls within about two weeks of a solar one, because the geometry that puts the Sun, Earth, and Moon in a line for one event puts them almost in line for the other. So if you're already planning around the total solar eclipse on 12 August 2026, tacking on the 28 August lunar eclipse costs nothing but a slightly late night. For anyone travelling to northern Spain or Iceland for totality, it's a natural encore.

What you actually need (and don't need)

For the lunar eclipse: no glasses, no filters — just a clear view to the west-south-west in the early hours of 28 August, ideally somewhere away from bright street lighting. A pair of binoculars will show the shadow's curved edge crossing the lunar surface beautifully, but the eclipse is easily enjoyed with the naked eye.

For the solar eclipse two weeks earlier, the rules are the opposite. Direct viewing of even a heavily eclipsed Sun without a certified filter causes permanent retinal damage in seconds. Certified ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses are the only safe way to watch the partial phases, and they need to stay on for the entire event unless you're standing inside the narrow path of totality.

Two eclipses, two very different disciplines: one you can enjoy with your eyes and a warm drink, the other requires proper certified filters. Plan for both, and 2026 becomes one of the most rewarding sky years of the decade.
